It feels as if this past week has been a constant bombardment of 9/11 memorabilia, stories of “how the fateful day changed” our lives, and so on…
…yet I have become somewhat jaded and disconcerted with not only how our memory of the events have come to settle into our day to day lives, but how we have somehow forgotten the tragedies of the past, we have forgotten that in order to honor those of 9/11 we MUST continue to honor the tragedies prior to the 9/11 to ensure that our future generations will truly “Never Forget.”
It is quite humorous to me [[although the situation is far from humorous]] that we ‘salute’ those who were directly affected by the tragedies of the twin towers, yet just this past Labor Day rather than demonstrate the same honor to the men and women who have served our nation with their very lives, rather than a day of somber reflection in honor of the deaths and blood shed for our nation, the majority of Americans spent the day relaxing in the sun, shopping, and enjoying the day as if it were a holiday..
Have we already forgotten the tragedies of Pearl Harbor, of Vietnam, the Cold War, etc.? Have we already forgotten the blood that watered our soil in the Revolutionary War, the Civil war, the Civil Rights war, etc.?
You see 9/11 is honored today because the tragic memory is fresh in OUR minds.. yet will we fail to keep this emotion in the minds of our future generations? Will 9/11 become the Pearl Harbor of future generations? Give it 40 or 50 years, and sadly the answer will be yes…
