Every new semester my students complain. They complain due to the fact that during class discussions, including controversial or heated in topic, I as the professor always refuse to give my opinion.
They complain because no matter the topic, I always play the antagonist to the majority opinion of the classroom.
When the class seemingly has found a conclusion to an issue, I come in as the devil’s advocate and throw a wrench to their solution. This always causing further discussion and analysis beyond what they assumed to be the only correct answer.
They complain and always ask, “Why can’t you just give your opinion?”
Why do I, their political science professor, never give my personal opinion?
Why do I force further analysis beyond what has been concluded?
The answer is simple.
I am here to teach students the buffet of political knowledge.
I am not here to indoctrinate students into my way of thinking.
(Although I do think it is amazing if I do say so myself)
**smirks sarcastically**
The buffet of knowledge is the same for all and it is my job is to reveal all buffet options of political science. It is the student’s job to decide what they will take away from this buffet of politics.
This I had the honor of learning from the greatest professors in my academic tenure as a student.
I only intend to continue the legacy of free thought in the classroom.
Regardless my opinion.
